Premium umbrellas look great, function well and save money. We’re always shouting from hotel roof tops about the value we can bring you as a shade solution so we’ve put together a few calculations and pointers for you to find out how much you could save in staff time and maintenance costs.
Middle-of-the-road umbrellas from a hardware store are made from low-cost materials and thus need to be replaced often.
Let’s say on average a hardware store umbrella (HSU) lasts 2 years before needing to be replaced. A Shadowspec umbrella (SSU) designed for hospitality is manufactured from premium materials and will last for 10-20 years with proper care and maintenance. You will spend more to get this type of quality.
You can do a simple calculation for how much you can save just by phasing out your HSU’s and replacing them with a premium Shadowspec umbrella.
1 | Umbrella cost per year (HSU cost x HSU amount) / 2 years = Cost per year E.g. ($600* x 13) / 2 = $3,900. (*Not actual pricing, indicative only) Now, let’s run the same calculation for a premium umbrella that will last 5 times longer. (SSU Cost x SSU amount) / 15 years = Cost per year E.g. ($4000* x 13) / 15 = $3,500 (*Not actual pricing, indicative only) |
RESULT That’s a saving of $400 per year for the life of the umbrella or approx $6000 for the venue. |
Our next calculation is for staff time. Some umbrellas take between 30 and 120 seconds to close (90 seconds average). Shadowspec’s range takes 5 seconds per umbrella. Plus the time to move between umbrellas, which we will estimate at around 10 seconds.
Here’s the scenario: a storm is on the horizon and you need to get the umbrellas down to ensure they don’t get damaged.
2 | Staff time |
RESULT That’s a saving of 18.4 mins every time your staff open or close umbrellas - over 200 hrs per year. |
Staff time has a cost attached to it, which is the wages we pay them for their hard work. Their time is valuable as they have a variety of tasks so it’s good to know how and where they’re spending it, and they’ll be happy too because umbrellas don’t tip.
We can add on to the same calculation to find out how much you can save in staff wages with a Premium umbrella.
3 | Staff cost (HSU open time x 2 times) x (wage / 60mins) = Cost per day x 360 days per year E.g. (21.6 x 2) x ($15p/h / 60) = $10.80 x 360 | $3,888 per year Now let’s run the same calculation for a premium product. (SSU open time x 2 times) x (wage / 60mins) = Cost per day x 360 days per year E.g. (3.25 x 2) x ($15p/h / 60) = $1.63 x 360 | $585 per year |
RESULT That's a saving of $3,303 per year. |
